My first sock looks like it would fit the Jolly Green Giant!

Last night I finished my first sock! Since I have big feet (women's size 10) I made the sock about 1/ 1/2 inches longer in the foot. I like how they fit although I think they are a tad too wide for my foot. I think they will be perfect for my duck shoes as my feet are always cold when I wear them. Hopefully the snow will hold off until I finish my second sock and then it can snow, so I can try them out!

They look so huge in the pictures. They probably would fit the Jolly Green Giant better. I'll have to work on perfecting the sizing on my next pair. I do think this was a good pattern to try first. Doesn't the foot part look huge in this picture? Even though it is probably too big for me, I love it....feels very comfortable on and after all it's my first sock!
Today I took Sensational Knitted Socks by Charlene Schurch out from the library.
Hopefully this book may give me the help I need to perfect my sock knitting. There is tons of pictures, information and techniques, as well as patterns. Maybe this is another book I should add to my knitting library?

Happy Knitting :)

  1. Good job for your first sock attempt! I've been wanting to make some socks myself, but the closest I've gotten so far is a Christmas Stocking.

By the way, You've been tagged! Go to http://wrchili.blogspot.com to see what it's all about! Happy knitting!

  2. Nice sock! I think the foot looks so big compared to the ankle because the ribbing makes the fabric scrunch up.
    What yarn did you use?

  3. I agree with Jill, the foot just looks big because of the ribbing. It looks great on your foot! For big feet, you can also look into sock patterns for men. Most of them translate to a large women's foot.

I have a huge foot, size 11. I had a terrible time figuring out how to make my socks fit. I finally took lots of measurements of my foot and that helped. Apparently I have a low instep and it was causing everything to be too tight right before the heel. Now I do gradual increases all the way up the foot to accomodate my wedge of a foot.

I love Sensational Socks. Very inspiring! Now that you've got the construction part, you can get really fancy.

  6. Your first sock looks wonderful. And as others have already said, the ribbing pulling in the leg makes the foot look big. You are going to love the SKS book. There are a lot of neat tips in it.

  10. Jill,

I used woolease. Nice inexpensive yarn
to try out sock knitting...plus the bonus is it's machine washable and dryable!

    happy knitting :)

  11. Love the sock!! You did a great job. Maybe when you wash it the stitches will tighten up a bit so it will be a little bit snugger around the foot? My first socks were also made with woolease, and I wore them so much I finally wore a hole in the bottom!!

  12. Oh, darling, it's a great start to a love-affair with knitted socks. Believe me, I went through 3 strange-looking socks (one which is hanging on my bulliten board at work, much to the dismay of my co-workers) before I found my perfect technique. I think it looks great - and if you can use them with your duck shoes, all the better!

  17. Sensational Knitted Socks is a great book...the sequel is coming out soon, too! The book made socks that fit my ankles and feet much easier to make.

I finished my first pair out of woolease too. The tops were a little tight. Eh. You win some, you lose some.

  18. I'm here rather late in the game, I was Googling to try and figure out the measurements for a womens' size 9 or 9.5 foot as I'm knitting socks for a friend. My feet are size 7.5 so are pretty much useless in this endeavor.

Anyway, I love the photo of the sock lying flat, it totally made me giggle! But it was great as it made it easier for me to look at my own sock and judge if it's in the ballpark or not. It was looking huge to me but I don't think I was all that far off.
