First of all I just wanted to say I'm still here, but I'm way behind in my blogging...posting and reading. My non-blogging life has really got in my way. I've been doing a little knitting, but I don't have a whole lot to show you.
Today is the official start of Bits and Bobs Yahoo Group's Fish-a-long KAL. Bits and Bobs is a group that shares ideas on how to use up all your leftover odds and ends and not just yarn...all kinds of scraps. Have you ever seen this Tessellated Fish blanket? I've always admired it but directed my attention away from starting one because of the horrible thought of having to sew all those fish together. My goal is to assemble one without sewing a stitch! I sure hope I can pull it off.... we'll see. I shall keep you posted on my progress.
Here are a few of the fish I have already done:
If you are at all interested in the Fish-a-long be sure and join us in the fun and use up all your odds and ends.
Wednesday I went shopping with two of my knitted plastic bags:
I made a smaller bag to try out:
This one was knitted with smaller needles. It didn't stretch as much, but although it holds quite a bit it didn't hold as much as my original big bag. To be honest I think perhaps a size in between the very big one and the smaller one might be the answer to the perfect bag. I'm planning on making another one (medium size) soon. (Am I starting to sound like Goldilocks?)I just wish I had more time. School's out now and baseball is almost over, so hopefully I'll be starting to have more time for myself....maybe...
I must say though I caused quite the commotion at the grocery store this week. Walking the aisles with the bags in the shopping cart baby seat worker gals noticed my bags. They thought they were great! Lots of questions I might add. Then at the checkout it was almost embarrassing all the questions I got. I was worried that the people behind me were cursing me because I was holding everything up. I got much more attention with my two bags this week than with just the one bag last week. Hopefully everyone will get used to me using my knitted bags. I'll definitely keep knitting them...my Dad is giving me his bags now. Have to find time to do all my knitting ....
happy knitting :)
I always liked the fish blankets, but as you said, it was a horrifying thought to sew them all together. How are you going to assemble it without sewing? About your shopping bag experience. There was a time I used fabric bags, basket and whatnot to make our weekly shopping. It was all fine with my daughter. My son is too embarrased because the cashier would shout out about this cute basket and that cute bag and everybody would look. Now if I want him to help me with all the shopping and carrying, I have to use the plastic bags. But when I'm alone I use my other stuff and gladly. It's my fear that we will be burried on day under a mountain of shopping bags. ;o)
ReplyDeletei cant wait to see more fish! and your bags are great... you deserve the attention. you did an awesome project..who cares about the people behind you in line..dont they know your saving the planet!
ReplyDeleteOh how cute are those fish!! Love them! And your smaller bag is cool too. I am still so amazed at your cleverness. :)
ReplyDeleteOh, sweet little fishies. I'm very partial to fish designs - being Piscean and all...
ReplyDeleteThose fish are so cute! I would also love to know how you are going to hook them (bad pun) all together without sewing? Maybe crochet somehow? You are always up to something clever! :)
ReplyDeleteGreat fish! I have long been a fan of that tessellated fish blanket pattern. How do you do it without tons of seaming? Seems like I saw a long discussion of that on some board (kitters review??) but I don't remember how they did it.
ReplyDeleteGreat fish. If it wasn't for all that assembly I would make one ... but I am way too lazy for that. I can't wait to see yours.
ReplyDeleteoooh, that blanket looks really cool! we did a project in geometry in high school where we had to create cardboard shapes that tessellated and then make a poster of them... it was really fun to see how the pieces came together! i hope yours ends up being a lot of fun, too.
ReplyDeleteThe fish are just too cute! And the fish blanket is amazing...
ReplyDelete... I don't know - isn't glueing the fish together going to make the blanket a little stiff and sratchy??? :) Well, you've already proved to be very innovative so I can't wait to see how you are going to pull this off! And the bags! See - you are going to be famous for that design yet! Thanks for squeezing in your posting. Blessings, hakucho.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to seeing how you put this together without sewing. I've seen the blanket and think it's cute, but can't imagine ever finishing one because I hate hate hate seaming.
ReplyDeleteMy compliments on your determination to use all of your yarn leftovers, and I can relate to the aversion of sewing the fish together. The thought truly makes me cringe. I'm sure they'll look lovely however you choose to connect them. Btw, I've been wondering about the Raggedy Ann doll your mom made for you. I'd love to see a picture if you have one handy. I, too, made a cloth version of Ann and Andy back in 1980, but only Andy has survived.:( Anyway, good luck with the fish!
ReplyDeleteteehee, it seems as though we're all in the same boat about the fish blanket--we all love it but couldn't imagine having to seam it up! I'm sure in your next post you'll tell us how you plan on not having to seam one stitch! How long does it take to knit up one of your grocery bags? Now you know you like the attention just a lil bit! ;)
ReplyDeleteI love all the fish and can't wait to see the finished project. Everytime I use a plastic bag now or get some at the grocery store, I think of your cool bags that you've made! What a great recycling project!! On my 'someday' list....
ReplyDeleteThose fishies are so cute! Your bags are wonderful, and it's great people are interested in them! I hope it inspires them to reuse grocery bags too!
